The term crop and crops differ in their meaning.
Crop:yield from plants in a single growing season(In this SC the tomato).
Crops:Various plants that may include tomatoes,coffee,cocoa, sugar cane etc.,and which are collectively called Crops.
In this SC author is speaking of one harvest only that is of tomatoes and hence crop is the correct word here and I think this sc is more meaning based rather than S-V-A based.
This is my 2 cents,I may be wrong!
