here comes the retake!! 680 Q48 V35 [#permalink] New post 09 Mar 2010, 16:06
Hi guys - haven't posted for ages but have used the site and it has been really useful.

Took the GMAT today and disappointed, scored 680 Q48 V35 - was hoping for Q49/50 V39/40. I was panicking throughout the Quant test that the questions seemed too easy and therefore that I was doing badly and the Verbal test was a nightmare as I suddenly had 2mins and 6 questions left which meant simply guessing and not reading. I am a native speaker and the most annoying thing is that my Verbal score on the GMAT prep before studying anything for it was 35!!

I spent basically the last 6 weeks studying fairly solidly, working through all the MGMAT books, OG12 and both the verbal and quant review books (also bought a kaplan maths book). Having also bought the GMAT club online tests I managed to do only 6 tests in total and one MGMAT prep. I had worked through the MGMAT strategy books which are great for learning the topics - the Quant and RC, CR are fine and I am fairly strong, but the SC book is driving me crazy!! I went through it maybe twice and still could not tell anyone about it - I had no strategy for it except maybe choosing the one that sounded best.

My question is to everyone should I retake?? My chosen school is Bocconi in Milan for an MSc Finance which requires a GMAT of 650+ but full scholarship a GMAT of 700. I know if I could just actually learn SC and not have rushed those 6 questions I would have scored 720+ The admissions deadline for the 4th round is 10th April and 5th and final round 10th May, I also wanted to apply to LSE and HEC who I think will want better scores. My main problem is that I am in my final year of university and with a huge amount of work from now until the end of May I may not be able to dedicate much time to improving my score and actually come out with a worse score. If people think I should retake what can I do to really smash the SC which I feel like I need to learn first rather than study with the MGMAT book.

Also any advice I would give to others would be to work hard on SC - do not do what I did! The other sections in Verbal are straightforward to learn as is the quant section but the SC just wouldn't go in!!!

Any advice would be great...

Thanks x

hi - from your debrief it sounds like you could easily stand to break 700 by retaking it. having 2 mins left for 6 questions is pretty tough. definitely try to get more practice tests in. I see you already purchased the MGMAT books, so definitely fit in the rest of the full length tests which you did not do.

for most people, getting 20 extra points isn't a huge dealbreaker, but with a full scholarship on the line, i'd definitely recommend you retake it. other than focusing on working on your timing, try to relax over the next few weeks. if you're feeling stressed as you approach your test date, take a break from studying; go for a walk/run, read a magazine, watch tv. your mental state during the exam is just as important as how much knowledge you actually learned during your studying.

make sure you get in touch with your b-school first to make sure that taking the test next month will be acceptable for the application (some schools only require you to list your GMAT score on the application, but others require the official test score be sent before the deadline, which would typically take an extra week). good luck

Retake question is usually a tough one with your score. I would say probably no - 680 is a strong score and well within the average of most schools...
Don't take me wrong - you can do it (no doubt about that). The main question - is it worth it?

cheers guys for your suggestions - it has been driving me nuts all day!! Spoke to two target schools and requirement is 650 with both but with LSE I need a really strong application to have a chance. Although with my degree I am on course for their grade requirement, it is from an average UK university which weakens my chances. The admissions lady did urge me to apply ASAP though as places were filling up (as expected). What I may do is apply to both schools now with my GMAT score but let them know I am retaking on 9th April.

I think while writing this I have convinced myself that I have to retake it as the score is not representative. Thanks for your input guys and the website in general - really helps!!

Now because I am coming to the end of my degree I have lots of work I will not be studying as much as I did before. I know the maths thoroughly - so will just maintain that level by doing regular tests and reading revision notes during the week. The verbal I probably will not do any work on either RC or CR as again there is not much I can do with these until close to the exam - when I will again just revise and practice. The main issue is SC, as I mentioned before I did not develop ANY SC skills despite going through twice - therefore I may buy the powerscore SC book I heard mentioned and go through slowly each book over the month period (as opposed to the crash course in a day or two) Any other advice especially about cracking SC would be great!!

Cheers
