Hi Guys ! Need you help. Thanks [#permalink] New post 21 Aug 2005, 09:26
Hi Guys,

Before I start off, Congrats Paul on LBS, Venksune on Thunderbird. Nice to see you guys in great schools.

I am reapplying this year. I couldnt make it to any of my choices for 2005 class. :(

My profile

1. GMAT = 680 AWA 3.0
2. TOEFL = 283/300 Essay 6.0/6.0
3. Work Exp = 5 + yrs in Consulting
4. GPA = 3.1/4.0
5. Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology
6. BS = Chemical Engineering.

I am applying this time to

1. Yale
2. Darden
3. INSEAD

I need your suggestions on two things.

1. If you have not notices, my Post Graduate Diploma is an equivalent of MBA. Some wellwishers feel that majority of the ivy schools dont accept candidates who are already a MBA or an MBA equivalent.
2. My AWA score is not impressive for sure.

Can you suggest a way to strategise my applications this time ? Thanks :?

Thanks

Krish

Hey krish, good to hear from you again and thanks for you well wishes. I'm not sure for Yale but your consulting experience would be a positive factor for Darden and INSEAD which are based on the case-method approach.

I do not believe that b-schools would reject you on the basis of your AWA or post-graduate degree. Had you had an MBA, I would then understand but your specialist degree could only be built upon with a more generalist MBA degree; do not worry for that. As a matter of fact, my best friend's cousin went to HBS and she had a PhD. Your overall GMAT looks good, although slightly below average for the schools you mentioned. What you could emphasize on are your leadership capabilities and your extra-curricular activities. Moreover, make sure your essays are well written. Send me a PM if you need assistance with that respect.

It is good to hear from you again.

The AWA score is quite low - see the last post of the following:
http://www.gmatclub.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=11043

A PG per se should have little effect on your application- many students with MA/MS/MD/JD/Phd degrees later receive an MBA. However, a PG in a business field could be a greater concern. Depending on the coursework of the IT program, it is unlikely to overlap too much with a generalist MBA program. Whether Ivy League schools care about previous advanced degrees is of marginal concern since you are considering only one school in that group.

I am curious: How did you select your portfolio?
