High GPA/GMAT, Little Business Experience [#permalink]
18 Dec 2012, 20:10
Here's my profile
GMAT 700-740 (Based on practice tests, I'm taking it on January 8)
GPA: 3.91 from a southern public university with degrees in Finance and Political Science D1 athlete, Honors program graduate, conference honor roll Study abroad in France for a summer
2 years teaching English in Korea 8 months working at a resort in Guam 3 years running an online marketing firm (owned sites and did SEO and Social Media Marketing for affiliate sales) - before it failed I had three part time employees in the Philippines and was making around $2,000/month. I can read Korean, but don't speak it past a basic level, have an upper beginner/lower intermediate level of Japanese and whatever college Spanish is worth
My goal is to work internationally, either with a consulting firm or a larger company in sales and marketing. If I'm not able to work internationally after graduation (which I understand is a pretty big likelihood), I'd ideally like to end up in the Southwest or Southeast US.
I'm putting together a list of what MBA schools I'm going to apply for this fall after I take my test, and I want to know what my chances actually are with an elite-level school. So far I'm considering applying to UCLA, Duke, Thunderbird, and UVA. Is it all how I present my experience in my essay or is my application going to get thrown out at certain schools without being looked at because of work experience? What other schools would you suggest that I look at?

cwary, Your strong/varied international profile, high GPA, and projected high GMAT are strong assets for you. Your work experience, even though 'unbranded,' is nothing to be defensive about -- the leadership experience and niche focus (online marketing) will help you. You are in at T-Bird, and should have at least a decent shot at UCLA, Duke, and UVA. You do need to use the essays and reco letters to help the adcoms make sense of or show the common threads behind you varied experiences. You could also consider strong marketing schools like Michigan, Texas, Indiana. --Paul Bodine, Great Applications for Business School, http://www.paulsbodine.com/testimonialscwary wrote: Here's my profile

Hi Cwary, Great international experience. It will be important to demonstrate leadership capabilities and to reflect on what you have learned in the essays. You didn't mention what you are doing currently. It will be important for you to continue to show that you are using your time wisely. I am a career coach and would be happy to talk about how you can continue to pursue career opportunities while you are applying to business schools. Please feel free to send me your info. http://marveladmissions.com/contact-us/Good luck! Christine Lin If you like this post, please give it KUDOS! cwary wrote: Here's my profile
