+1 for E.

The presence of comparison idiom "not so much by" un-underlined part indicates that we have to look out for two things:
1) Correct idiomatic usage = not so much X as Y is the correct idiom => A, B and C are out.
2) Proper comparison = D is out as it is not parallel. by ability .... is not parallel to a vocabulary that is ...

E wins.

I'm happy to respond. :-)

One important idiom to know is the structure "[b]not so much X as Y[/b]." Whenever we see the beginning of this structure, we must have the end. Thus, only (D) & (E) complete this structure: since (D) is awkward & clumsy, (E) has to be the answer.

All of the correlative conjunctions are very good to know, because if you see the first part, you know the second part must appear.

This is another issue that could arise with the parallelism within any correlative conjunction:

Thank you for sharing those. I came across Google to look for a valuable tip for high school students exam when I have this thread. I would love to try this one soon as I get the exam.
