Historians believe that the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, which contained not only the mummified remains of pharaohs but also gold and gems to pay for the journey to the lands of the dead, were most probably cursed to keep from being raided.

(A) to keep from being raided
(B) to keep them from being raided
(C) to avoid being raided
(D) in order to keep from being raided
(E) to avoid it being raided

E is out due to wrong pronoun "it "
D, compared to A, is redundant ----> If D is correct, A will be better ----> there's no possibility that D is correct ----> out

"them" in B is redundant. --->out
C is more concise than A.

I go for C.

I shortlisted B and C.. and I think I'd settle for C as it's more precise and crisply conveys the information.

A)..."keep from" is better than "avoid" in this context. "avoid" is used in a more formal way...IMO

we need an object to know what to keep from being raid.

B uses them perfectly to refer golds and gems. so them in B is not redundant but neccessary.

that is why B is the correct answer.

uhm, we clearly know that what is "kept" here is the tombs as the sentence uses passive voice---> there's no need to use "them"

Naking called it! OA is B!

OE:

Spot the Concept Being Tested:
Tough case, no standard spots.
If there are no spots, move straight to the Chunk and Compare step and let the answer choices show you what is wrong.

Chunk and Compare:
Compare A to B.
The first difference is the them・in Choice B.
The question you should ask is do I need the them to add clarity to the meaning? Answer, yes.
Something has to be protected from being raided・
Eliminate A.
Eliminate all other choices that make the same mistake.
Eliminate C and D.

Compare B to E.
The difference is them・in Choice B versus it・in Choice E.
The subject that the pronoun is replacing is tombs・and so the pronoun must be plural.
Eliminate E.

Reread Sentence With Your Choice and Choose an Answer:
Choose B.

uhm, i think the good way to test the correctness of this kind of SC is to convert the originally passive voice into active voice.

The ancient Egyptian cursed the tombs to keep them from being raided
----> The tombs were cursed to keep them from .....

Well, I'll remember this mistake.

Very good question indeed.

Since "which" is used to modify a non-restrictive clause, we know that 'them' is used to modify tombs.

Will keep in mind that ETS prefers clarify over ambiguous sentences! :flower
