Re: HKUST 2013- Calling All Applicants [#permalink]
ppc23275 - see my answers below to your questions

1. does hkust generally interest in applicant like me? diverse culture background, career changer, with experience in small start-up retail, interested general management and leadership development program in hong kong or china,

Yes - HKUST favours diversity, be it in terms of nationality, geography, ethnicity or work experience. So your profile fits what HKUST is looking for.

2. i checked the employment report, there is a good percentage of student get into General management/ leadership development program. usually what are the companies that offers such programs? mostly in hong kong or china? what kind of pre-mba experience do they usually require?

There is a good mix of local and international companies, some of them include Apple, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Li & Fung, IMS Healthcare, Eli Lilly, DHL (in house consulting), Microsoft. Most companies operating in China look in terms of language skills (fluency in Mandarin). Prior work experience depends more on what the role entails. But usually, prior work experience is not a major issue. Most of the companies are either head quartered in Shanghai, Beiing or Hong Kong, so it depends on which company you apply for.

3. about working visa: most of the students from hkust are international students. for a us citizen, is it difficult to get a working visa in china or hong kong?

Not at all - if you study in a HK institution, you automatically get a 1 year work visa which does not need sponsorship from any company. After 1 year, a company usually sponsors you and the process is efficient and friendly - not a nightmare like H1B. Dont wory about visa issues - its the last thing students think about.

hope this helps..

Not sure if anyone has gotten an outright acceptance or rejection yet? I interviewed a month ago and HKUST admissions said they would have a decision in 4 weeks. They e-mailed me recently saying that they need another 4 weeks to further review my application and make a decision. Anyone who has interviewed receive the same response?

Interview calls to Indian applicants have been sent out in the past few weeks - some folks from Bangalore received their invites during the holidays.

Re: HKUST 2013- Calling All Applicants [#permalink]
Hi,

I was just checking some of the old posts for the 2012 and 2011 admissions cycle and came across posts where students already received final offers by mid-Dec and Jan 1st week. Has anyone received final admit/ reject offers for the 2013 admissions cycle yet?

Also does HKUST compare students from R1 with R2 students to give interview invites or is each round treated stand alone and independent. The reason I ask is because I came across old posts where students who applied in R1 be invited for interviews with R2 and R3 candidates.

Please let me know the answers for the above 2 queries.
Thank you very much!

1. Admits have started trickling in - not as many in the same time frame compared to last year but the process has started.
2. R1 and R2 are treated separately and independently. Last year due to timing issues some R1 students were interviewed later in R2 round. Students are not compared across rounds.

your GMAT score is will within the average range required by HKUST. No need to re-take it. I would recommend you emphasize more on your work experience, especially your international exposure and what you have gained out of it.

Definitely apply this year.

They sent me an email letting me know that they will take 4 more weeks for their decision. I was interviewed in dec 6.

I think I am going into the second round bag... I cant think of any other reason to move their own deadline...

Any thoughts on that?

Even I believe that for average R1 candidates they are comparing the applications with R2 candidates applications before sending out interview or final offer.

Good luck with the application - it is possible adcom is taking extra time as they may feel that there are other stronger candidates with similar profile as yours and they need extra time to re-evaluate.

Nope - this does not happen. Applications are not compared across rounds.
