Option B and E are wrong because of "are"....Option C misses "former" word...In between A and D...A looks concise and simple...

C changes the meaning and D is wordy.

A is the correct answer.

Between A and D, A is good as it uses and for painter and writer. Here equal emphasis is required. B uses as well as, this puts more emphasis on painter.

my doubt here is the use of "openly" in all the options except c. Openly is an adverb but is pointing what ?
Please explain this part as i get frequently confused in adverb - adjective usage.

Openly modifies the adjective homosexual.

Can anyone explain why 'A' is preferred over 'D'? Is it an idiomatic error?
