How do they score TOEFL, listening part? [#permalink] New post 07 Jun 2010, 01:00
I tried yesterday the first two parts of the test from the official guide, reading and listening, without preparation, got 1 wrong answer in each section. Then compared my points with the score and found out, that for reading I would get 30, but for listening I would get from 28 to 30. Actually even if you get all the answers in the listening part right, your score is still 28-30. It just sounds so unfair that in the listening part you can get 28 out of 30 even if you answer correctly all the questions.

Does anyone know more about it?

Hi, Cielo
I did the TOEFL about two weeks ago (13th of august) and I got 27/30 and I'm absolutely sure that I was mistaken more than once. you can read my post (My TOEFL Experience - 109 , from a few days ago) and see that I got really interrupted by the noise and some questions in the listening part were very detail specific, so I totally guessed a few. Unless I were very lucky, it doesn't seem that one wrong answer will reduce 2 points off your mark. Any how , I did the listening part from the ETS sampler and it seemed very easy to me, but take into account the noise in the class and the fact that some of the listening parts use a lot of details and some complex words (not like in the sampler) , so I recommend you study with some complex listening material.

Good Luck!

Hmm that doesn't sound right... I'm more inclined to believe that it's the prep software's scaling system that's a bit off. Don't worry, a 30 in the listening section is perfectly possible

Hola Cielo,

I took the TOEFL some weeks ago and I also guessed at least 2-3 questions in the listening section and I got a 29/30.

I'm sure if you get all the questions right in the real exam, you will get a 30.

To avoid distractions during the exam, I suggest you to use earplugs all the time, even during the Listening section. Then turn volume up to the limit and then you will only hear the conversations. In my exam I brought my own silicone earplugs and they saved my exam.

Good luck
