I have a question for you fine guys/gals here. How do you "showcase" your demographic to a school without flatout telling the adcom "i'm so and so"? Do I mention this on the admissions essays? in the app? etc? ANy suggestions would be greatly helpful.

if it makes a difference: I was born here but my parents are from two different countries. I can elaborate more if needed.

Depends on the school. Some specifically ask about your background and what makes you unique. This can be an appropriate spot to discuss that. They also ask for ethnicity at a lot of schools so if you area mix of two you can sometimes write other and explain there.

That said where you parents are from can either hurt or help you...obviously its a lot better if they both come from underrepresented demographics.

It's only worth highlighting if you consider it a major part of your identity and how you have been influenced by it. In which case, you can showcase it in your essays.



The other way to showcase it is to hire a big theatre, and actors and write a play. Invite adcom to the show

I mean has it benefited any applicant who was on the fence by the adcom?

I guess we dont get what you mean. Yes your background is important and can make a huge difference...not so much where your parents are from but how they shaped you. It also helps to fall into a less competitive group, if you are Indian its going to be much harder than if your family is from Sudan. Being in a demographic isnt going to get you in but it mean you are facing easier competition, it also can give you a very unique way to position you if you do it right.

Talk about cultural clubs you've led, the travels you've made, experiences from your childhood in a different demographic, the student clubs you want to lead in the school you're applying to, etc...

Those are all ways to showcase your demographic and help the adcom form a diverse and well rounded class.
