How I got to 690 : Q 47 and V 37 [#permalink] New post 20 Nov 2012, 16:47
Re-took GMAT, 2nd attempt, on sunday -- scored 690, Q 47 and V 37.
Unfortunately, this is my lowest quant score from any of the tests that I have taken.
3 weeks leading upto the test, I was consistently scoring 720 in GMAT prep. ( Q 50 and V 38). So, to see Q 47 in my final GMAT was really frustrating and disappointing.

I never had any issues with Quant and I was even scoring 49-50 in MGMAT quants.

How I managed to screw up my quant: (went from Q 50 to Q 47)

Hardly put 10-15 hours preparing for quant section.
I always get carried away when I do GMAT math and always pick questions (time consuming or questions that get you to Q 51) that I skip.
I was determined to score a 51 in my actual GMAT and pushed myself a bit too hard.
I spent more than 10 mins on 2 questions (25th and 26th) and resulted in me answering the last 6 questions in 90 seconds. ( I know, this is the most stupidest thing that any one could ever do :-D )
I did not prep up my mind, early in the morning (8 am), for quant. I am pretty sure that I bombed IR section (expecting no more than 5, compare this to 8/8 in my 1st GMAT attempt).

How I got to 37 from 28 in verbal:

I identified weaknesses from my 1st GMAT, especially in verbal.
Used Ron's material (extensively for RC).
RC has higher weightage than SC or CR.
Out of 13 RC questions, I am pretty sure that I nailed atleast 11.
Out of the rest, 28 questions, I missed atleast 12-13, even then I managed to score 37.

So, identifying your weaknesses will help a long way in improving your score.

Regular question : Does any one recommend a retake ?

I am wanting to get into a good 1 year full time programme and considering ISB, Kellogg etc.......any other suggestions ?

My profile:
25 year, Indian male
Automotive/electronics background
Have both B.s and M.s in electrical engineering (from India and USA, respectively)
3 years of full time experience.

Any inputs would be great. Thanks !!
