How important is golf in a finance career? [#permalink]

I'm interested in financial services in the NYC area and want to work for one of the big firms.

Though I'm quite young, I have very frequent contact with a partners at GS, MS, ML, BBH, and it seems that they are playing golf with each other ALL the time. So here's the (strange) question for this forum:

How important is being a good (or even passable) golfer to a high-level career in finance?

I've been a national-caliber athlete in four different sports, and I think I could become a good golfer in a matter of a couple months, but is it worth devoting the time to? Are the networking/socializing benefits that strong?

By the time it becomes important you will have enough money to become good at it. Before that point it is serves no purpose at all.

Plus if you suck at golf but are good at your job, it won't matter. It is the social climber equivalent of smoking so you can hang out with colleagues to get the skinny on what is going on in the office. Seems a lot more important than it is.

You'd be surprised at how many deals have been done on a golf course.
