How many 3-digit numbers satisfy the following conditions: The first digit is different from zero and the other digits are all different from each other?

Please explain!!!

1st place cannot be 0 so there are 9 ways to fill

2nd place can also have 9 places ('cos 1st place has taken away one of the #s from 1-9 so there are 8 #s left and there is also the "0")

For third place we have on;y 8 ways (since the #s are not to be repeated)

9*9*8 = 648ways
