That is what I call a "gotcha" question. It is a simple math question, except they catch people by a syntax. I wonder what percentage of people got it right the first time.

Yes, good description- it's a very easy trap to fall into. And if they'd used the notation f(x), it's likely no one would fall into the trap- instead they wrote a box around each number to express the function.

There's another question in GMATPrep which does have the wrong answer, which I'll dig out of my notes at some point- don't have the details handy.

I wish 800score would change that! It looks silly to have such a glitch. A 59Q would do wonders for many a GMAT score!

How about this for motivation, a 51Q with a decent V guarantees 700, anything more on verbal and your total score begins to jump. That 51Q does wonders for your overall score.

What really amazes me is the difference between each step from 48 to 51. Since it is just 3 steps, it might appear "easy", but going from 37 to 40 is totally different than going from 48 - 51. To get into the 40s you might have to know |3x + 1/2| > 5. But to go from 48 - 50 or 51 it's like the authors take it as a personal challenge and throw everything they've ever been taught at you! I've been stuck at 48 now for a few weeks. I've accepted it and am trying to bring my verbal up from 40 to the mid 40s. If I can do that, it should push me over the 750 mark.

I hit 710 (Q49,V40) and 710 (Q48,V41) on the two GMATPrep tests I've taken in the last few weeks.
