This question has two problems:
1. 1 mile = 1760 yards and not 1160 yards.
2. All answer choices are incorrect using either conversion from miles to yards.

Here's the approach:

$$\text{rate } \times \text{time } = \text{ distance}$$

Given

$$\text{rate} = \frac{\text{45 miles}}{\text{hr}}$$

Converting miles per hour to yards per sec

$$= \frac{\text{45 miles}}{\text{hr}} \times \frac{\text{1 hr}}{\text{60 mins}} \times \frac{\text{1 min}}{\text{60 sec}} \times \frac{\text{1760 yards}}{\text{1 mile}}$$

$$=\frac{\text{22 yards}}{\text{sec}}$$

Asking time in secs to travel a distance of 22 yards

$$\text{rate } \times \text{time } = \text{ distance}$$

$$\Rightarrow \text{time } = \frac{\text{ distance}}{\text{rate}}$$

$$\Rightarrow \text{time } = \frac{\text{22 yards}}{\text{22 yards per sec}}$$

$$\Rightarrow \text{time } = 1 \text sec$$

This is not in the answer choice.

Also if you use the conversion rate of 1 mile = 1160 yards then time = 1.5 sec which is also not in the answer choices.

Hi Nookway,

I think that your calculation and logic are correct. There must have been a type in the question/answer. To begin with, 1 mile = 1760 yard as you indicated. Second, Official Answer to my question book is C (or 10 Mile).

There must have been a typo to indicate 10 instead of 1.0 mile in choice C.

But I am glad to see that your logic matches mine and that I was not crazy. Thank you very much for your explanation!!

Can't believe I just spent 5 minutes staring at the answer and double checking my calculation! I get between 1-1.5 seconds. Correct nookway!
