How to address lecturers in essays ? [#permalink] New post 09 May 2009, 18:20
Hey all. Quick question: in your MBA app essays, how did you refer to the lecturers ? For example, did you call them "Professor X", or "Mr./Mrs. X" ? And in either case, did you use their full name, or just their last name ?

Or, did you take a totally different approach that I haven't thought of yet ? :-D

Thanks in advance !

I said things like "I look forward to taking Professor Smith's class on xyz"...I usually left out the first name to save that extra word :)

I did the same as isa and used Professor <lastname>. When I visited schools, the students and adcoms all referred to the faculty in this manner so I followed suit in my essays.

Definitely use Professor and definitely don't use Mr./Mrs.

Firstly, "Mrs." is a tricky thing on its own, which I would recommend avoiding in general. I stick to "Ms." in most situations.

Secondly, using Mr./Ms. in a professorial context might neglect the fact that the professor quite likely has a PhD, which merits the title Dr.

Using Prof. avoids both of these potential pitfalls and is the most common title used.
