How to break into finance without finance background? [#permalink] New post 27 Feb 2014, 11:57
I've got a difficult one:

So I'm of an IT background (education and work experience) and I want to get into finance. I'm thinking that an MBA will help me achieve that.
However! A finance institute (or a bank for that matter) wouldn't accept someone with an IT background, fresh graduate from an MBA to work in finance, once they can select someone (maybe with an MBA too) and some finance background, right?
So how does one get experience in finance...without having experience in finance?

Please share your thoughts!

I think , no one is going to see where are you hail from and what did you do . companies are interested in what you may do for them . an MBA degree may be an evidence that you are serious about finance . Like you , I am of science background , and also want to enter into world of finance . I think , students of science background are able to work in financial institute because we can handle data and information better . science background may be a strength point , not a weak point .

Build the finance background through certifications like CFA/FRM. Get 750 in GMAT. Get into Top Finance school. From where you now it may take 3-4 years to get there.

Well, that depends, it can work both ways. If someone's been a software developer for 20 years, then I don't think it can work in his favor, however I have seen people with PhD in science getting into finance. Then again, in most cases I don't appreciate a PhD holder more than I do a MSc holder (plenty of my friends have a PhD and I've seen really dumb people getting one, so, sorry for the bitter truth).
I suppose there are positions in finance that a sciences degree can be used in your favor which obviously I'm not aware of..

Surely that's one way, but there are many ways to skin a cat. Though I don't know what CFA actually includes, I sort of agree on that part.
