How to land a General Management job post-MBA [#permalink] New post 16 Jul 2008, 19:33
Can anyone tell me what the best method is to land a general management job after obtaining an MBA? This is assuming an MBA from an M7. Is it best to use headhunters? I'm sure some companies actively recruit.

I'm very interested in working for AIG Aviation. Other than simply contacting the company, can anyone offer their best advice as to how to go about getting a job with a specific company.

I'm interested generally in the aviation industry. Possibly manufacturering (Lancair, Cirrus, Eclipse), but I am very interested in starting my own insurance underwriting company for general aviation (definitely a long-term goal).

As a pilot, and in a family of pilots (often think maybe I should have become and Air Traffic Controller instead of going to law school, but only on bad days) I want to be involved in aviation in some form. I realize that some may consider an MBA unnecessary, but to be successful in any size of a company, a top-tier MBA is certainly helpful.

Very interesting topic!!

I'm also interested in the Aviation world (I've worked for two years and a half in avionics systems and that period was amazing)

jallenmorris, thanks for coming it up!!

Cheers

Firms come to campus for all sorts of GM / Leadership Rotational / Executive Development / STrategy / Operations roles.... You can certainly recruit on campus. That said, certainly if you have a particular firm you want to target (whether or not they actively come to campus), you go to the alumni database, you find anyone whose worked there (or at competitors too), and you start making calls. You network and network until someone says 'send me a resume'. Often, its not that hard - the harder issue is whether or not they happen to have the job you want.

I've been doing this recently with Washington DC based firms as I'm seriously contemplating trying to make a leap to that area (lots of reasons). Speaking of which, if anyone knows of good firms to work for in the DC area, drop me a PM, I'm always interested in hearing about different opportunities.

In anyone's experience, is the process a lot different for tech management? Are there many opportunities if you're not at one of the big "tech schools"?
