How to raise my Verbal score from 38 to 44 in 20 days? [#permalink] New post 10 Aug 2012, 10:31
Hi all,

I recently gave my first mock (GMATPrep) yesterday and got a 700 (Q - 48 and V - 38).

Material used for Verbal:

SC : Manhattan SC 4th edition
CR : Powerscore CR bible
RC : OG13

I plan to use RC99 for RC in the future.

In my first mock, I definitely was rushed into answering the last 4 questions and got them wrong. Total incorrect was 12.
Approximately how many can I get incorrect to reach my target goal, and what should my strategy be to improve my score?

Thanks!

For RC, I would recommend watching some of the GMATPill RC Pill videos - http://www.gmatpill.com/practice-questi ... -guide-rc/

I would also advise reading some essay-like publications:
Economist
Scientific American
Harvard Magazine - social sciences, humanities, etc http://harvardmagazine.com/topic/humanities

For CR, try a gmatpill practice question here: http://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... stion/1314

If you want to reach your target of 700, you should aim for no more than 6 incorrect responses. Of course, your exact score will depend on what the difficulty level of the questions you got wrong were, as well as whether the question was quant or verbal.

Hi,

I gave another mock (Retake of Gmatprep 1) and scored 41 in english. None of my RCs were wrong and I finished on time but again I didnt finish well. I got 3 out of the last 4 wrong. I had a total of 10 wrong all CR and SC. 14 days to go for the test. Any advice on how to improve my score further?

Don't worry so much about the raw number incorrect; rather focus on the difficulty level on the questions you got wrong. Of the questions you got wrong, review them heavily to determine which questions were within your ability level. For those questions, determine why you missed them and look for patterns: I misread the question, I moved a bit too quickly, I didn't understand that grammatical principle, etc. Try to gain as many insights that are broadly applicable to all questions.

You should be completing timed sets (ie 10 questions in 20 mins) with a heavier focus on CR/SC and continue to look for those general areas of improvement.
