How to get to 50+ from Q49-50? [#permalink] New post 23 Feb 2012, 05:35
Hi all,
I'm pretty good at math, usually scoring around 50 in Q. I'm not super good at medians, averages and some factoring and sometimes percentages. I make mistakes when I'm not careful enough and have problems wih pacing - I can finish 15-5 minutes earlier than needed... (but who needs that? :))
I've seen recommendations for "advanced" math books, but I'm not 100% sure that those questions are really representative of GMAT (am I wrong here)? So how do I make my scores better?
Or should I just do all the questions in the OG and hope for the best? :)
thanks, I am really not sure if I should concentrate on Math or not. (I have 2 months before the exam)

50 is a top score for quant... I am assuming you are referring to your raw score? if so no need to improve I think the highest someone has ever gotten is 51...

oops,
I thought that 60 is maximum.. and people clearly score 51-52. I was concerned bc if you get 50, even though the problems are hard, you still make mistakes, around 6-7! And I am sure that those can be eliminated.
Ok so basically the advice is to stick OG, and hope to get the same result (around 50) at the actual test :)

50+ is a near perfect Quant score.
A bit of luck plays a role - on your way to the end of the test you have to get every little quant question correct. One small slipup will send your raw score down.

60 is the maximum, but no human has ever scored higher than 51 on the test on either Quant or Verbal. I guess a 60 is possible if you get all 37 questions correct though, but these computer adaptive exams will find a way to shoot you down at a certain point.

I haven't heard of anyone scoring more than 51 in either one of the sections in GMAT. If you get 51 in both sections, you get a score of 800 i.e. perfect score. The scores of 52-60 are probably reserved for future use by GMAC (when the test gets tougher and the candidates get even smarter!)

By the way, you can get a 51 even if you make some mistakes. Say, you make some silly mistake in a calculation and answer an easy question incorrectly. After a while, the software will realize that the error was an aberration since you are obviously smarter (after you answer some higher level questions correctly). So that error will be ignored. Also, if the questions you answer incorrectly are super hard but you answer some other super hard questions correctly, you could still get Q51.
