How to Score 650 [#permalink] New post 10 Apr 2012, 15:31
Hi everyone,

I will be taking GMAT by August 2012. I have't even started studying for the GMAT yet. I was looking over the requirements for the universities I want to target. It seems like if I score 650+ I stand a very good chance of getting in. The GMAT test is freaking me out and I need your help.

I am a average student who had 3.19 in college with a BS in Business. I am not a "A" student and its another reason why I am freaking out. Please suggest on where to get started and how to get to 650. Is 650 too high for someone like me who is not a "A" student. Plz suggest on whereto get started with and how to get to the magic number of 650!!!

Well the first thing you should realize is that getting the score has very little to do with whether you are an "A" student and a lot more to do with how focused and how much work you want to put into this thing.

Try taking a practice test first to see where you are at right now, and that'll give you a better idea of where to start. Also, definitely cop The Official Guide, that's a must have

Swoosh617 makes a good point here. There's no need to think that the odds are against simply because you're not an A student. There's also no need to freak out already. You haven't even started!

I suspect that some of your apprehension is because you're not quite sure what the GMAT is all about. The first step, then, is to continue searching this website and read whatever interests you. There's so much information on the test, strategy, and guidebooks. Read that stuff first and then re-post here with your ideas. We can go from there.

Also, you have plenty of time to prepare. And tell us how you do on your first practice test! (Remember to take the practice test under realist test conditions.)

1. Take a test from GMAT Prep to see your current position and read simple instruction about GMAT.
2. Read the experience box and see what people at the your score level do.
3. Buy books and download material recommended.
4. Focus on each section (SC,CR...) and do not mix them together.
5. After each 2-3 weeks, do a CAT to see your progress.
6. Review your note and mistake , visit gmatclub to discuss and solve problems regularly.

That's my opinion to get your score. Hope it helps.

I am in your same boat. Definitely wasn't an A student in college. Take the practice test like the others are recommending. It'll help gauge where you are. It'll also help you feel more comfortable with the format. If you put in the effort, you'll do great. Good luck!
