How to sleep better before the day of exam? [#permalink] New post 16 Aug 2013, 22:56
So I was wondering what do people do to sleep better before the day of exam? Has anything worked for you? I usually tend to get really nervous before the day of exam and barely manage to get any sleep..

So how does one overcome this problem?

Hi!

It's a really good question. I'm sure there are many ways to overcome the nervousness! I've found a method that worked for me, but I cannot say for certain whether it will apply to everyone equally well.

I scheduled my GMAT in the afternoon, on a Monday. I took a day off on Friday, so I had a nice long weekend. I didn't study very much, because I'd already done as much as I could, and I didn't want to start second-guessing my ability to score well. Over the weekend, I did a lot of reading, watching TV, and playing video games. I relaxed as much as I could and started going to bed much later than usual. As a result, I fell asleep when I was tired, and slept until I was ready to wake up!

The night before the test, I went to bed at 2AM and woke up at 11.30AM. Although I was very nervous, I felt fully rested and ready to perform.

Of course, not everyone can be expected to react in a similar way, but I can tell you that I'm glad I changed my sleep schedule around to better accommodate my needs.

One thing that we usually recommend to our students is to stop studying 2 days before the test. Spend the last 2 days relaxing and carrying on with stuff that you do regularly. Whether it is reading, watching TV or hanging out with friends, do whatever is needed to unwind.

Spend the week prior to the test just going over the notes you've made during your preparation. Refresh your fundamentals and the concepts that you usually tend to go wrong on. Don't take any tests during this week as this might unduly stress you out.

Do not picture "What if?" scenarios. :)
I know this is easier said than done - but imagining what may go wrong on the test is never a good idea. Don't add any unnecessary pressure on yourself!

Last, but not the least - take a deep breath and tell yourself that the GMAT is just an aptitude test. It is not the beginning and end of your world. Life will go on irrespective of the outcome of the test! (though it may feel like the biggest thing in the world now, 5 years from now, you won't even remember what this felt like! Trust me! :))

I don't think I have shared any short-cuts to get good sleep - but just some changes in the way you approach the test will definitely help you handle it better. ALl the best!

I've actually ruined 2 GMAT attempts due to lack of sleep. I even practised some mock exams with less sleep, Since I thought I would be in a similar situation and didn't want to make excuses this time around, but the results were disappointing.

It is "normal" to get less sleep the night before the test. However getting too little or none may be a problem.

My thoughts would be to try to handle the stress and keep at it until you can force yourself to function normally. Another option is to schedule the test in the afternoon. (You should get some sleep one way or another) though I think you should test at the time you perform the best.

Do not recommend the pills or anything like that. A regular schedule is the best thing.

i recommend making love to your bf/gf, It releases endorphins into your brain that make you sleepy.
"Orgasms help you sleep better. In addition to increasing trust, attachment and bonding, the post-O hormone oxytocin triggers a cascade of bodily events, including the release of other feel-good hormones called endorphins. These endorphins often have a sedative effect. So it's no surprise that most of us have enjoyed a fabulous night of sleep following some really great sex."

You could also take melatonin or some xanax, but if you're not use to it, you might end up taking too much, and the residual amount may be left over the next day and might be released into your brain during the test (stress caused by tests will promote release and binding).
