Actually the correct expression is something like this----"However much scientists....blah blah blah..."
still i would go with A....

B,C,D obviously wrong,
I am caught between A and E.
I discard A because of the incorrect idiom. However by itself is used for contrast.
E seems correct,

E seems correct, The focus of E is determination. No matter how have scientists determined... The theme is not "different ways of determining", rather it is "different ways determined". So E modifies the original intent.

E seems correct, Buff, I thought about this. While it is true that "however" is used for contrast, "however" can be used for different meaning as well. For example: However he did it, it was very clever. In the sentence above, "however" means "whatever way". Source: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/however
