1. "him" can not refer to "Hubert Humphrey's", so I rule out B, C and E
2. D wrong because "attempt...were"
3. A for me.
4. Wait to see others explain something about rule of "himself"

B,D are ouot Sub-verb agreement
c,E are out him should be himself.

A reflexive pronoun refers back to the subject of a sentence. himself is correct usage here.
also him(Object pronoun) Cannot refer back to possessive Noun.

(B),(C) and (E) are eliminated since him here is not the correct usage as per the given context.

between (A) and (D) i go for (A) since attemp should be followed by "was" and not "were"

This SC is testing use of refexive and possessive pronouns.
We need a reflexive pronoun " himself" to associate the action "dissociate" with the subject.
=>him - B,C,E ->OUT

attempt - was
were -C->out
