D. take D over A or B.

A. has "and" and "that", both are wrong. Also A and B has "this", which do not have correct antecedent. therefore, i take for the lack of the above problems.

I believe it's E.

"and" is wrong in both A and B.

"which" modifies courtship. So C is wrong

D - says that the hydrocarbons assist to taste. This is not right. The hydrocarbons don't help to taste. So D is wrong.

E is right answer. It correctly modifies "hydrocarbons" by using "assisting" and keeps the right meaning of the sentence.

I was in for D but after reading through saw the answer in E

also in D ->to distinguish their own species from those of do not sound right

what do you guys think?

I go for E. I would definitely chose E over D. From those of is incorrect here. C using "being" and starts with which, which is a noun modifier and I believe must touch the noun it modifies, which it does not. Correct me if Im wrong.

A and B, "apparently this assists" , seems ambiguous and ungrammatical.

Between D and E - just to see why D is wrong:

apparently assisting flies to distinguish their own species from those of others ---> Those makes the sentence weird

apparently assisting flies in distinguishing their own species from others --> this is perfect
