Only E or C could be correct.
IMO C, as it maintains the parallelism of the sentence. OA?

IMO E too.

Hydrocarbons is the subject so the last part should refer to hydrocarbons rather than the "way in which fruit flies perfume". A, B and C out.

D=> "to assist" is not the intended meaning.

"That of" is used to refer singular noun where as "those of" is used to refer plural noun. I am not sure though.

Whats wrong with D?
thanks

Problem with D is "assisting flies to taste". This phrase changes the meaning of the whole sentence. The hydrocarbons assists in distinguishing the species and not assists in tasting which actually D mentions. E correctly mentions "assisting flies that taste the hydrocarbons.... in distinguishing....."

Hydrocarbons, with which fruit flies perfume themselves in species-specific blends, are known to be important in courtship, and apparently this assists flies that taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates to distinguish their own species from that of others.

A. and apparently this assists flies that taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates to distinguish their own species from that of

The 'this' is ambiguous and needs a noun immediately following it so we know what 'this' refers to. Also, 'own species from that of' is confusing. What does 'that' stand for? Should simply be 'their own species from other species', or using ellipsis, 'their own species from others.'

B. and apparently this assists flies when they taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates in distinguishing their own species from those of

Same issue as (A).

C. which apparently assists flies that tastes the hydrocarbons on prospective mates in being able to distinguish their own species from

The use of 'which' incorrectly modifies 'courtship.' Also, 'in being able to...' is wordy.

D. apparently assisting flies to taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates to distinguish their own species from those of

The idiom is 'assisting in Verb-ing'. Here it is 'assisting...to taste.'

E. apparently assisting flies that taste the hydrocarbons on prospective mates in distinguishing their own species from

Use the correct idiom, 'assisting...in distinguishing.' Also, correctly compares species to species.

Hope that helps :)
