Email from Sales Manager at C&C Pharmaceuticals to Head Pharmacist at Healthy Hope Hospital

May 11, 12:30 p.m.

I discussed your bulk order of 20000, 100mg tablets Hex-D (Hypertensive drug), 15000, 50mg capsules of Dib-LX (Anti-Diabetic drug) and 20000 100mg tablets of Beta-KL (Cholesterol lowering drug) with the manufacturing team. The first two drugs are in stock, but we are short of 10000, 100 mg Beta-KL tablets. However, we have 20000, 50mg Beta-KL tablets in stock. Would you like me to change your order for Beta-KL tablets to 10000 100mg tablets and 20000 50mg tablets? The manufacturing team also informed that a new version Hex-DX of the hypertensive drug Hex-D is available. You can pre-order the new drug, but there will be a delay of two weeks. Do you want me to change the order for 10000, 100mg Hex-D tablets to 10000, 100 mg Hex-DX tablets? The current prices of drugs of a single dose are as follows 100mg Hex-D tablet $0.6 50mg Dib-LX capsule $0.7 100mg Beta-KL tablet $0.8 50mg Beta-KL tablet $0.45 100mg Hex-DX tablet $0.75

Email from Head Pharmacist at Healthy Hope Hospital to Sales Manager at C&C Pharmaceuticals

May 12, 10:30 a.m.

Our hospital is in need of the Beta-KL tablets and we want you to send 20000, 50mg tablets along with the 10000 100 mg Beta-KL tablets. However, as we placed our ordered long back and got your confirmation of our order, we were expecting that the request dosages will be delivered. We would be glad if you can offer the new order at the same total price for the 20000, 100mg Beta-KL tablets. We want to order additional 20000 50mg Dib-LX tablets; do you offer bulk order discounts on the drugs. For the next quarter we want to order 25000 50mg Dib-LX. Competing with the Hex-D’s new version Hex-DX, a new drug – Prox-G is launched by GML Pharma and it is offering it at a competitive price of $0.65 per unit. The management is considering Prox-G, but our doctors like Hex-D and want to try Hex-DX. If you can offer 10000 Hex-DX at the price of $0.7 and 10000, 100mg Hex-D at the regular price, along with bulk order discounts; our management might give you the order.

I checked with my team that they had confirmed your order and I apologise for the inconvenience. We will be happy to give you 10000, 100mg and 20000, 50mg Beta-KL tablets at the price of 20000, 100mg units with bulk discount on 20000 units. My supervisor agreed for the bulk discounts of 5% on an order of 10000 or more units and of 10% on an order of 20000 or more units. I can’t offer you the requested price for the Hex-DX drug, but will give you a total discount of 13% on your order of Hex-D and Hex-DX drugs. Please note that for other drugs, the bulk discounts are calculated as per the units of a particular drug of a particular dosage. For example, for your order of the Beta-KL drugs, there will be 5% discount on 10000 units of 100mg Beta-KL and 10% discount on 20000 units of 50mg Beta-KL.

1) Assume that the Senior Pharmacist at Healthy Hope Hospital accepts the offer from C&C Pharmaceuticals, what will be total cost of the order. All amounts are in dollars. A) 29800 B) 30200 C) 31200 D) 33600 E) 35100

2) For each of the following statements, select Yes if the statement can be shown to be true using the information provided. Otherwise, select No.

Yes No

Statement 1: Healthy Hope Hospital may shift to GML Pharma for the hypertensive drug.

Statement 2: According to doctors at Healthy Hope Hospital, Hex-DX is more effective than Prox-G.

Statement 3: The Head Pharmacist can determine difference between the cost of the Hypertensive drug from GML Pharma and that from C&C Pharmaceuticals.

3) In the email conversations given, the Senior Pharmacist employs each one of the following methods EXCEPT.

A) Requesting some sort of relaxation for the inconvenience caused by the other party B) Indicating the value of the existing relationship C) Indicating discontent in some part of the existing relationship D) Willing to discontinue total services from the other party E) Expressing interest in company’s product

A lot of confusion in the calculation of discount on Beta-KL drugs has arised due to the following lines: 1. We will be happy to give you 10000, 100mg and 20000, 50mg Beta-KL tablets at the price of 20000, 100mg units with bulk discount on 20000 units. (A discount of 10% on the price of 20000 , 100mg Beta-KL)

2. For example, for your order of the Beta-KL drugs, there will be 5% discount on 10000 units of 100mg Beta-KL and 10% discount on 20000 units of 50mg Beta-KL. (A discount of 5% on 10000,100mg Beta-KL + A discount of 10% on 20000, 50mg Beta-KL)

Answer 1: (E)

1. Beta-KL = {0.8*20,000}*90% = $14,400 (at the price of 20,000, 100mg units; with bulk discount on 20,000 units => a discount of 10% on the whole order) 2. Hex-D & Hex-DX = {(0.6+0.75)*10,000}*87% = $11,745 (at a total discount of 13% on the whole order) 3. Dib-LX = {0.7*15,000}*95% = $9,975 (at a discount of 5% because 15,000 is more than 10,000 & less than 20,000)

Total = $36,120

Therefore (E), the closest option.

Answer 2: (D)

A. The pharmacist employs this: she asks 10000, 50mg Beta-KL & 10000, 100mg Beta-KL at the price of 20000, 100mg Beta-KL. B. She employs this: she writes that the hospital would like to place an order for additional 20000, 50mg Dib-LX tablets and 25000, 50mg in the following quarter. C. She employs this: she mentions that they were expecting the delivery of the requested dosages, expressing discontent for the delay on part of the pharmaceutical company. D. Correct. Nowhere does she mention that the hospital is willing to discontinue TOTAL services of the other party. E. She employs this: she expresses interest in the newly developed drug, Hex-DX.

Very tough, and confusing. Initially, it had me thinking that Hope will give an order for the additional 20k DibLX as well. But apparently the answer value comes to be too high.

Anyway, These are my answers. 1. (13.5 - 1.35-0.405)+ (10.5 - 0.525) + (16 - 1.6) = 36.12k -- So I am not getting any one of the answers given. 2. No, No, Yes 3. D
