“Whether” is used when there are alternative choices.

Ex: I don’t know whether I will take the GMAT this month (or not).
Incorrect: Her client didn’t tell her if he had sent his payment yet.
Correct: Her client didn’t tell her whether he had sent his payment yet.

Note when whether is used there is no dependence of the second action on occurence or non occurence of the first action.




“IF” is used in a conditional sense. Note there has to be some sort of If ..( this happens).....then ( the oter action ).... ......
Ex: If you prepare well you will get a good score.
