I row upstream 36 km and back again to the starting point in 5 hours. If the speed of the stream is 3 km/hr, what is the speed of the boat in still water?

a. 30 kms
b. 7.5 kms
c. 15 kms
d. 22.5 kms
e. 18.5 kms

C, 15 kmph. Let the speed of the boat be x kmph then upstream will be (x-3) and downstream will be (x+3) so 36/(x-3) + 36/(x+3) = 5 we get the equation 5x^2 - 72x - 45 =0 solve for x we get 15 kmph
