I was reading some where and encountered the following sentence:

Despite the bravery displayed by Bambi in the movie, the adult deer on my uncle’s farm are extremely
skittish, and each of them passes this trait onto its young.

My question: Shouldn't the "are" replaced by "is"

The adult deer here refers to the multiple number of adult deer at the farm and hence are for me is ok here.

You can't say "the adult deers are" ..more like "in general, the adult deer are.."

Here "deer" is the antecedent of "them" (plural)

At first i feel are is correct but what about 'the" doesn't it gives a singular touch to it, or we are free to use "is" or "are" depending upon the meaning?
