Can someone explain to me why D is incorrect? I was down to C and D and wasn't able to decide between the two. Aren't both versions idiomatic?

even a wordy option can be correct but in most cases go for the shortest and cleanest. if theres some error (grammar/meaning) in the shortest option then you can directly cross it out... but if you are left with multiple correct options, then go for straight (active voice), short and clean option. Gmat hates unnecessarily wordy answers (just like this one :p)
