Re: Identifying Tone - Confusion [#permalink]
Expert Reply
honchos.

Generally, the "tone" of the author can be found in the final paragraph (but not always). If you ask yourself "is the author just providing me information or are they making some kind of statement about the information presented?", this will allow you to determine whether a passage is descriptive or analytical. The same question can be asked on the other side - is the author simply presenting opinions, or is he forming his theories based upon a study of the issue? In the passage you included, there is truly a mix of description and opinion. The key question is, is the argument presented by the author (that Lum's poetry does not really fit into the two themes normally present in Asian American poetry from Hawaii) purely opinion or is there an "analytical" aspect to it? The author certainly presents a number of opinions, but he also puts forth his "proof". Thus, the tone of this passage is Analytical because he is analyzing how the themes of the Lum's poetry compare to the themes found in traditional Asian American poetry from Hawaii. As to whether the tone is positive, negative or neutral, is the author saying anything about whther Lum's poetry should or should not follow the norm? In this case, no so the tone is neutral.

Hope this helps.
