Can someone explain the idiom equally well?
and also the use of equal rather than equivalent.

Let me try this one...

Well (adjective) - used to refer to health

E.g.
I am feeling equally well
subj+verb phrase+adv+adj

Well (adverb) - other meanings

E.g.
Chorbakr is an equally well established community.
subj+verb+adv+adv+adj+subj complement

As adjectives:
equal = equal :)
equivalent = nearly equal
