IF 500 is the closest multiple of 100 to x and 400 is the closest multiple of 100 to y ,what is the closest multiple of 100 to x+y??

1) x<500
2)y<400

It was solved before for E as an answer still i see it is D

MY REASONING IS AS FOLLOWS:

GIVEN:

451<X<549 , 351<Y<449

FROM ST ONE:

451<X<500 AND 351<Y<449 ADDING THEM TOGETHER

802 < X+Y < 949 THUS 800 IS THE CLOSEST MULTIPLE OF 100 TO X+Y

fROM ST TWO

351<Y<400 , 451<X<549 ADDING THEM TOGETHER

802<X+Y<949 THUS 800 IS THE CLOSEST MULTIPLE OF 100 TO X+Y

i DONT KNOW WHERE AM I GOING WRONG....SHOULDNT THIS BE D NOT E?????hELP

(1) alone we have 450<x<500 and 350<y<450 so 800<x+y<950 =>insufficient ( we can't tell whether x+y is closer to 800 or 900 )
(2) alone we got the same problem and insufficient either
(1)(2)together we got 800<x+y<900 so can't tell 800 or 900 is closer
E it is.

This is E...

stem says X~500; y~400; question asks x+y ?

(1) says x,500

lets take x=499...then assume y=401; then x+y=900, 900 is the closest multiple of X+Y... on the other hand x=451, y=398=X+y=849 closest multiple is 800..Insuff

(2) y<400

well we tried both examples..its insuff

E it is..

Answer: E

Given
x = 100 x 5 + m

where m is some integer.

y = 100 x 4 + n

where n is some integer.

S1: x < 500

This implies m < 0

But don't know anything about n.

Not sufficient.

S2: y < 400

This implies n < 0

Again don't know anything about m.

Not sufficient.

S1 & S2:
Given m < 0 and n < 0

Therefore,

x+y = 100 x 9 - (m+n)

If (m+n) > 100 then closest multiple cannot be 9 (is < 9)

If (m+n) < 100 then closest multiple is 8.

Not sufficient.
