If 500 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to x and 400 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to y, which multiple of 100 is closest to x+y ?

1 - x < 500
2 - y < 400

I assume that 1 - x < 500 means "Statement (1) x<500". Same for y.

The information in the stem can be written down as
451 < x < 549
351 < y < 449

The range of x+y is [802, 998], so we have three possibilities for the closest multiple of 100: 800, 900, 1000

Statement 1: The range of x is narrowed down to 451 < x < 500 , so the range of x+y becomes [802, 949]. We still have more than one possible answer, so the statement is insufficient.

The same logic applies to statement (2).

When we combine the 2 statements, we get
451 < x < 500
351 < y < 400
and 802 < x+y < 900

I think the answer should be E, because we don't have a single solution even after combining the 2 statements.
