If 8x > 4 + 6x, what is the value of the integer x?

(1) 6 – 5x > -13

(2) 3 – 2x < -x + 4 < 7.2 – 2x

Sol:

Given:
8x > 4+6x
2x > 4
x > 2

Q: x=?

1.
6–5x > -13
-5x > -19
5x < 19
x < 19/5
x < 3.8

x is an integer. x > 2 & x < 3.8
Only integer that comes in this range is 3.
x = 3
Sufficient.

2.
3 – 2x < -x + 4 < 7.2 – 2x
Add +x to the nested inequality
3 – x < 4 < 7.2 – x
Split them into 2 separate inequalities:

3 – x < 4
x > -1
&
4 < 7.2 – x
x < 3.2

x is an integer; x > -1 & x > 2 & x < 3.2
means;
x > 2 & x < 3.2
The only integer fits in this range is 3.
x = 3
Sufficient.

The question says, 2x > 4

=> x > 2

(1)

6 - 5x > -13

=> 19 > 5x

=> 19/5 > x

=> 3.8 > x

So if x is an integer and 2 < x < 3.8, x = 3

(1) is sufficient

(2)

-1 < x and x < 3.2

So if x is an integer and 2 < x < 3.2, x = 3

(2) is sufficient

Why do you think the explanation is wrong (and what is the explanation) ?

x>2

1.Sufficient

6-5x> -13

x<3.8

=> x =3 (as X is also greater than 2)

2. Sufficient
3-2x<-x+4 => x>-1
-x+4<7.2-2x => x<3.2
=> x =3 (As x is also greater than 2)
