The median of the five numbers is the middle number when arranged in ascending/descending order.

Since we know nothing about the relationship between {a, b, c} and {d, e} then we can not say which of them is the middle term. For example consider the following ordering: {e, d, a, c, b} --> median=a and {a, c, b, e, d} --> median=b. Not sufficient.

Answer: E.
