Which one of the following most accurately expresses the principle illustrated above?

(A) People are especially likely to ignore the advice they get from doctors if they are confused about that advice.
(B) People dislike calculating the best of a variety of choices unless they can see a clear difference among the benefits that would result from each choice.
(C) The tendency people have to alter their behavior varies inversely with the number of alternatives available to them for behavior modification.
(D) Most people are unlikely to follow their doctor’s advice unless they can vividly imagine the consequences of not following the advice.
(E) In getting good results, the clarity with which a doctor instructs a patient is of equal importance to the accuracy of the doctor’s diagnosis on which that instruction is based.

IMO C
Argument says :
FEW option=== more likely people will stick to them.
MORE option===less likely people will stick to them.

now in option C
There are alternatives for behaviour modification.
so as per given rule of argument.
few alternative===people will follow more, hence more behaviour modification possible.
more alternatives ==== people will follow less, hence less behaviour moodification possible
hence we can say behaviour modification is inversely proportional to number of alternatives available.
kudos if it helped.

We have causal relationship here:
- Doctor gives only few options --> more likely to adhere to doctor's advice
- Doctor give more options --> less likely to follow advice

C provides a tendency that "people have to alter their behavior varies inversely with the number of alternatives available to them for behavior modification" or we can put it in diagram:
- More options --> less likely to follow
- Less options --> more likely to follow

C describes what states in the premise. Therefore, C is the correct answer choice.

C is the answer. The less alternatives the greater chance the patient has of altering lifestyle which is the main conclusion here.

The lesser the alternatives the greater will the chance be of the patient altering lifestyle which happens to be the main point here.
And this is aptly captured in C.

Re: If a doctor gives a patient only a few options for lifestyle modificat [#permalink]
Answer is Clearly C option.
Boil it down- More options- Less chance to Ignore

(A) People are especially likely to ignore the advice they get from doctors if they are confused about that advice- 180 Option.
Confusion arises with More options and in this option- More options = More Chance to ignore

(B) People dislike calculating the best of a variety of choices unless they can see a clear difference among the benefits that would result from each choice- Out of scope
There can be other reasons as well to choose the option.

(C) The tendency people have to alter their behavior varies inversely with the number of alternatives available to them for behavior modification- CHAMP
Clearly stated- Inverse relation

(D) Most people are unlikely to follow their doctor’s advice unless they can vividly imagine the consequences of not following the advice- Out of scope
Same as B

(E) In getting good results, the clarity with which a doctor instructs a patient is of equal importance to the accuracy of the doctor’s diagnosis on which that instruction is based- Worst option
No relation is stated.

Re: If a doctor gives a patient only a few options for lifestyle modificat [#permalink]
The summarized version of this prompt is as follows:

few options (of lifestyle modification) ----> more likely to adhere (to the doctors advice)

Which one of the following most accurately expresses the principle illustrated above?

(A) People are especially likely to ignore the advice they get from doctors if they are confused about that advice. - The passage does not mention anything about people getting 'confused'. Besides, the passage discusses the 'likelihood' of adherence, not 'confusion'. Hence, we can eliminate (A).

(B) People dislike calculating the best of a variety of choices unless they can see a clear difference among the benefits that would result from each choice. - The passage does not mention any sort of calculation regarding the benefits, let alone the 'difference' among the available options. Hence, eliminate (B).

(C) The tendency people have to alter their behavior varies inversely with the number of alternatives available to them for behavior modification. - This is exactly what we have in the passage. Hence, (C) is the right answer choice.

(D) Most people are unlikely to follow their doctor’s advice unless they can vividly imagine the consequences of not following the advice. - The passage does not imply anything about what would happen if people 'do not' follow the doctor's advice. Hence, we can eliminate (D).

(E) In getting good results, the clarity with which a doctor instructs a patient is of equal importance to the accuracy of the doctor’s diagnosis on which that instruction is based. - the passage never makes any distinction between the clarity and accuracy of the doctor's diagnosis. hence, we can eliminate (E).

If you find this explanation helpful, please do give it a kudos  :)

If a doctor gives a patient only a few options for lifestyle modification, the patient is more likely to adhere to the doctor’s advice than if the doctor gives the patient many options.

Which one of the following most accurately expresses the principle illustrated above?

Few options ---- more adherence to doctor's advice
Consequently
More options ---- less adherence to doctor's advice

(A) People are especially likely to ignore the advice they get from doctors if they are confused about that advice.
(B) People dislike calculating the best of a variety of choices unless they can see a clear difference among the benefits that would result from each choice.
(C) The tendency people have to alter their behavior varies inversely with the number of alternatives available to them for behavior modification. - CORRECT. Only this option elaborates the logic.
