(A) If a single strain of plant is used for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, it
(B) If a single strain of plant is used for a given crop over a wide area, as is fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, it
(C) A practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, a single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area
(D) A single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods,
(E) The use of single strain of plant for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods,

A and B are eliminated just on the basis that an "if condition" cannot be a "practice".
C is incorrect in that it implies all practices fostered by modern seed-marketing methods are - a single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area increase bla bla. Actually the reverse is true.

D is incorrect in that " a single strain of plant bla bla" cannot be referred by the appositive "a practice".
However, all such issues are being rectified by using the appositive " a practice" that refers to " the use of single bla bla".
Hence E is perfect.

I picked E because it's the only one that makes sense.

A. If a single strain of plant is used for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, it
B. If a single strain of plant is used for a given crop over a wide area, as is fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, it

A and B are wrong for incorrect construction of If clause. Correct structure : If [verb in present tense], then will [base verb]. Since my second clause (then) is in simple present (increases) , my sentence cannot start with If clause.

C. A practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, a single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area
D. A single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods,

C and D are wrong for incorrect modifier placement.
"A practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods" modifies the subject "a single strain of plant". A single strain of plant is not a practice.

E. The use of single strain of plant for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods,
E is correct. "a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods" correctly modifies "The use of single strain of plant" and the singular subject agrees with the verb "increases"

I'm agree with you about C&D, but the IF Construction in A&B is perfectly correct. the problem with A&B is the usage of pronoun IT.
the antecedent of this pronoun is a clause while we can not use a clause as an antecedent

Misplaced modifiers in all options except E.
Also, attach an article to a verb and it becomes a noun. This is tested in E.

Regards,

The use of E is perfect?
Why is it not missing an "a", i.e. Shouldnt E read: "The use of a single strain of plant...."

Imagine if the prompt read: "If single strain of plant is used..." That is plain wrong!!
"Single strain of plant" is neither a noun or a noun clause. E should either read "single strains of plant" or "the use of a single strain of plant" if the intention is to refer to it as a collective noun.

What am i overlooking?
