I believe it is E..
A and B are clearly out.. C is awkward.. between D and E.. I think D has misplaced modifier..

E it is...it sounds more clear. But can someone explain why it would not be D?

I think E is better than D because the so-called "a practice" must be "the use of single strain"
" a single strain...." itself can't be a "practice".
E it is.

OA is E,
Don't you think the "it" in E doesn't have any antecedent . It looks like its refering to the complete phrase "The use of single strain of plant for a given crop over a wide area".
I have read somewhere that "it" should not refer to any phrase/clause.
pls explain.
thanks

In your original choices - "E" does not have "it" - only "A" and "B" have "it" in them.

'E' it is.
Between 'D' & 'E'....'D' has modifier problem. 'E' is clear in specifying the 'practice'!

The answer must be E.
The use (of single strain of plant) (for a given crop) (over a wide area), a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, increases...
"It" is a syntactic expletive that has no pronoun, therefore it should be avoided.

Incorrect usage of 'if' in a and b.Moreover what does it refer to?So eliminate a and b.Down to c,d and e.Now check modifier. What increases the likelihood?practice?Certainly not.So eliminate c.Compared to d and e,usage of 'The' is specific and correctly indicates what increases the likelihood that the impact of a single crop disease or pest will be disastrous. Hence E.

The answer can be "D", only if the dependant clause " practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods" is not present. The sentence "A single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area increases..." works only without the dependant clause. With the dependant clause, "the practice" refers to the "use of the single strain" not the "single strain". Hence it is a misplaced modifier and the answer is "E".

A practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, a single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area D. A single strain of plant used for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, E. The use of single strain of plant for a given crop over a wide area, a practice fostered by modern seed-marketing methods, Here the question is what increases the likelihood... is it the single strain or the use of single strain of plant for a given crop.. It is the use of the single strain.. so the subject should be the that. So we can eliminate C and D. In A and B , IT is referring to the use of the single strain... as USE is a verb in the sentence. Only E has The use of ... as subject SO E is correct
