(A) it will expand the amount that can be used as fuel and reduce the price of oil

(B) the amount that is able to be used as fuel will expand and the price of oil be reduced

(C) it will cause an increase in the amount that is able to be used as fuel and a reduction in the price of oil

(D) the amount that can be used as fuel will increase and the price of oil will drop

(E) it will increase the amount of oil that can be used as fuel and cause a drop in the price

Here is my take.

The split is sentence with 'it' and without 'it'.

Now 'it' has ambiguous meaning. It can either refer to 'findings' or 'missing do-er'. so to avoid confusion, fill the previous clause with some do-er. Lets say, "if additional oil deposits are found by US, it will ....". Now 'it' can't refer back to US. so the remove the split containing 'it'.

Between B and D, B is awkward. so D

And also, B and D convey differences of meaning by using expand and increase.

Expand refers to increase in volume/mass
Increase refers to increase in quantity.

So D is much better answer than B

E. it will increase the amount of oil that can be used as fuel and cause a drop in the price

E suggests increase in amount of oil and drop in the price of oil, here drop in price is implied.

If additional deposits of oil are found, it will expand the amount that can be used as fuel and reduce the price of oil, even if the deposits are not immediately tapped.

(A) it will expand the amount that can be used as fuel and reduce the price of oil

(B) the amount that is able to be used as fuel will expand and the price of oil be reduced

(C) it will cause an increase in the amount that is able to be used as fuel and a reduction in the price of oil

(D) the amount that can be used as fuel will increase and the price of oil will drop --> correct

(E) it will increase the amount of oil that can be used as fuel and cause a drop in the price

(A) it will expand the amount that can be used as fuel and reduce the price of oil

"expand" isnt't right to modify "amount". We should use "increase".

"it" is wrong. This "it" can only refer to "oil". However, the "oil" itself cannot reduce the price of oil (itself). It is the "additional deposits of oil" that reduces the price.

(B) the amount that is able to be used as fuel will expand and the price of oil be reduced

In gmat, "can" is better than "be able to". So we should lookout for a "can" in the later answer choices.

"expand" is wrong, same as A.

"be reduced" seems like the price is reduced by some human forces. However, it is the additional deposits or the force of market.

(C) it will cause an increase in the amount that is able to be used as fuel and a reduction in the price of oil

"it" is wrong, same as A.

(D) the amount that can be used as fuel will increase and the price of oil will drop

(E) it will increase the amount of oil that can be used as fuel and cause a drop in the price

"it" is wrong, same as A.

Hi krndatta,
The primary difference is that (D) is much more active than (B). Additionally, whilst can can (no pun intended!) indicate ability, the usage of "able to be used" is very awkward in this context as it seems to suggest that the "energy" had an "ability" to do something -- and that too, the ability to be used :-).

Hope this helps

ParamjitDasGMAT,

Only the difference between active and passive part is clear.

Can you explain once again please?

Hello krndatta,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, another error in Option B is that it fails to maintain parallelism between "the amount that is able to be used as fuel will expand" and "the price of oil be reduced"; remember, any elements linked by a conjunction ("and" in this case) must be parallel.

We hope this helps.

Hello krndatta,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, "the amount that is able to be used as fuel will expand" is an independent clause, and, as you can see, "the price of oil be reduced" is not, as "be reduced" is not an active verb.

We hope this helps.

But "it" as a pronoun cannot refer to the plural deposits.
