8. If I x I > 1, which of the following must be true?
I 3 I

0 x > 3
0 x < 3
0 x = 3
0 x ≠ 3
0 x < -3

I would like to know if this question requires finding the best answer. I used the method in # 7 by coming up with two scenarios through transposing I 3 I :

a. x > 3
b. x < -3
Since both a and b are in the choices, I just chose either one. Unfortunately, my answer was wrong.

I would like to know the correct method on getting the answer. I believe my method should not have been used at all for this kind of problem.

cpcalanoc,

I agree with your dilemma. This is what I did:
|x| > 1 has 2 solutions:
x > 1
OR
-x > 1
==> x < -1
++++
Based on the above,answers(a & e)
x > 3
x < -3
+++
satisfies.I would appreciate if someone else can provide further insights.
Rgds,

Anna

My ans is x ≠ 3.

This is the only condition that meets all the criterias. x can be either
< -3 or > 3.

Ques is asking which MUST be true. So the ans should always be true for all cases based on what x values can be.

1. x> 3: yes but not always true, e.g. x can be < -3 also
2. x < 3: yes but not always as we know x can be > 3 also
3. x = 3: can't be true in any case
4. x≠3 is true for all cases x< -3 or x> 3
5. x<- 3: yes but not always true, e.g. x can be > 3 also

What's the OA.
