If p is a positive odd integer, what is the remainder when p is divided by 4 ?

(1) When p is divided by 8, the remainder is 5.
(2) p is the sum of the squares of two positive integers.

Any solution?
Thanks!
Actually it seems a simple question, but I seem to be getting a different answer to the answer guide

[quote="prince13"]If p is a positive odd integer, what is the remainder when p is divided by 4 ?

(1) When p is divided by 8, the remainder is 5.
(2) p is the sum of the squares of two positive integers.

P = 8X+5....SUFF REMAINDER IS ALWAYS 1

p/4 = 8x/4 +5/4

FROM 2

INSUFF

1+9 = 10/4.........2

1+4 = 5/4............1

D

(1) Here the remainder is always 1

(2) if the two integers are 1 and 2, then 1²+2² = 5 --- 5/4 remainder is 1
if the two integers are 2 and 5 then 2²+5² = 29 ---- 20/4 remainder is 1

what is the source of this question ??

@yezz: Haha good point! Silly mistakes are still my downfall

@amitdgr: not sure of the original question source; a colleague who just did her GMATs gave me a list of practice questions to try.

agree that statement 1 is suff but how is st.2 suff?

2:
p = 1^2+ 2^2 = 5. the reminder is 1.
p = 1^2+ 3^2 = 10. the reminder is 2.

so st 2 is not suff.

so should be A.

It's sneakily tucked away in the question ... those writers are good!
