If something would have been justifiably regretted if it had occurred, then it is something that one should not have desired in the first place. It follows that many forgone pleasures should not have been desired in the first place?

The conclusion above follows logically if which one of the following is assumed?

A) One should never regret one's pleasures
B) Forgone pleasures that were not desired would not have been justifiably regretted
C) Everything that one desires and then regrets not having is a forgone pleasure.
D) Many forgone pleasures would have been justifiably regretted
E) Nothing that one should not have desired in the first place fails to be a pleasure.

I thought this is straight logic syllogism, so (D).

D here. A, C and E are too extreme, and for B we have no info about.

Arsene,
Could you elaborate on what you mean by logic syllogism. Please describes the steps to break this problem down.

This is a question of commutative property in deductive reasoning.

A -> B
B -> C
Therefore A -> C

For example, All my computers are made by Dell. This is my computer. It follows that this computer is made by dell.

In this CR problem, the above reasoning chain is used differently. It says:

B -> C
Therefore A -> C. This deductive reasoning can only mean that A -> B

The key in the argument in this CR question is the use of "It follows" immdeiately after a deductive argument "If something would have been justifiably regretted if it had occurred, then it is something that one should not have desired in the first place"

Here B = Something that would have been justifiably regretted
C = Something that one should not have desired in the first place
A = Many forgone pleasures

Choice D is my pick.

A acc to me!

Since I've had so much time to think, B is looking good to me too!

Premise: If it is justifiably regreted then it should not have been desired.
Conclusion: Many foregone pleasures should not have been desired.

Link from premise to conclusion: Many foregone pleasures are justifiably regretted.

Compare this with the options, looks like D is the answer to me.

I'm sorry gmataquaguy for the time it took to explain......like AJB explained, the example below is a syllogism:

All men are mortal
Socrates is a man
Therefore Socrates is mortal.
