If the botanist was right, the plant's failure to produce buds is caused by something other than the placement of the seeds and the moisture level of the soil.

the correct answer: in the PowerScore book, they change "if the botanist was right" to "the botanist is right"..

my question, why did they change it to the present tense?

Why not keeping it in the past and change "to produce buds is caused" to "to produce buds was caused"?

thanks,

You need to understand the intent

the plant's failure to produce buds is caused by something other than the placement of the seeds and the moisture level of the soil. - plant is still not able to produce buds

the plant's failure to produce buds was caused by something other than the placement of the seeds and the moisture level of the soil. - this happened in the past , plant may now be able to produce buds
