OA is (B)

Can someone explain the grammar part in (B)?
Why inversion needed here?

(B) Were the depletion of ozone in the upper portion of the Earth’s atmosphere to continue at its present rate, by the year 2000 the hole in the ozone layer would be at least one thousand miles wide.

Please correct me guys if I am wrong but "were" is for the subjunctive mood here. Though there is no verb or adjective which could strengthen this usage as we notice it normally in ets tests.
What do you think about that ?

were continuing is not correct.

for subject verb agreement you need "was continuing"
if you introduce the subjunctive mood then it becomes "were to continue" which is the (B) case with inversion...
That is why I posted my question above.

Oh, this is something new here. I hope you are correct.
So in subjective mood:

was -> were (I understand this)

but verb after (was/were) will be infinitive?

So:
was working
-> were to work?

I'm TOTALLY CONFUSED!!!!!! :? :? :x :x :x :x :x

The rule says the subjunctive is marked (in our case) by 'were' and the infinitive. Consider these sentences:

I wish I were a Lion.
My principal asked that i never be late for school.

They are in the subjunctive mood, but...hello infinitive??? can't find one!

Again, CAN ANYONE PS TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG WITH OPTION A???

well, I would strike off (A), (C), (E) because they use wider which seems unnecessary (redundant).

My view:
Subjunctive mood calls for the base form of the verb. (D) uses participle form of the verb. So we can strike this also.
Thus, (B) remains.

+1 for B.

at least ...wide or wider => redundant => A, C and E are out.

Looking at the sentence, we can figure out that we need to modify depletion.

B = If .... depletion were to continue
D= If ......depletion were continuing. => awkward

B wins.

Ya I guess B makes more sense. Choose E :-(

stuck between B and D,
meaningwise D seemed no less than a nonsense construction meaning present rate is to be followed in past which is incorrect hence B

nice question. quick way to eliminate options: A, C and E are out for redundancy. They use "atleast one thousand miles or wider" or wider is unnecessary. D uses "were continuing" which is wrong. what we need is the hypothetical subjunctive "were to continue". B is correct in it's use of the hypothetical subjunctive "were...... to continue". :)
