Let C, B, and T be the prices per kilogram of each type of cheese.

Then \frac{C}{B}=\frac{5}{8}, or B=1.6C.
The question is "what is T-C?"

(1) B=1.25T or 1.6C=1.25T; we can express T in terms of C, but we still don't have the value of C.
Not sufficient.

(2) T=1.28C. Again, we don't have the value of C.
Not sufficient.

(1) and (2) together: Not sufficient, as we can deduce only the ratios between the prices of the three types of cheese, we don't any specific value.

You do not even have to solve the other two statements
Just make sure you read the words (in dollars) as that is crucial, as the price of none of the three types of cheese is given we cant solve it.

Had it been find the ratio then we could have done it.

Yes, manyrhtdm is correct. You don't need to perform any calculations whatsoever here.

The question stem gives you the ratio of cost which is 5:8 (Camembert: Brie). It does not tell you the actual cost i.e. cost of Camembert could be $2.5/kg or$5/kg or $10/kg etc The question asks you to find how much higher the price of Toma is as compared with Camembert price. You need to find the difference between the actual prices. Both the statements only give you prices in percentages. So nowhere are you given data on actual prices. Hence, you straightaway mark (E). And no, it is not a 700 level question. More like 550 I would say. _________________ Karishma Veritas Prep | GMAT Instructor My Blog Save$100 on Veritas Prep GMAT Courses And Admissions Consulting
