If two cappachino machines work simultaneously at their respective constant rates, how many cups do they make in 5 minutes?

1) One of the machines makes cups at the constant rate of 250 cups per minute

2) One of the machines produces cups at twice the constant rate of the other machine.

Let Rate of first = x and that of second = y

St1: either x= 250 or y = 250. No information about the other. INSUFF to find the total rate (x+y)

St2: either x = 2y or y = 2x. INSUFF to find the total rate (x+y)

Combined:

if x = 250 then y can be 500 or 125
if y = 250 then x can be 500 or 125

So INSUFF to find the total rate (x+y)

I agree it is E.

1/c = 1/c1 + 1/c2;

1> inssuf as only c1 is given

2. insufficient as there are no real numbers.

1 and 2 insuff as

if c1 = 250 c2 can be 125 or 500. yielding different results.

therefore E.
