(A) -3 and 10
(B) -3 and 4
(C) 2 and 7
(D) 3 and 4
(E) 3 and 10

x + 5 > 2 --> x>-3;
x - 3 < 7 --> x<10.

Therefore, the value of x must be between -3 and 10 (-3<x<10).

If x + 5 > 2 and x - 3 < 7, the value of x must be between which of the following pairs of numbers?

(A) -3 and 10
(B) -3 and 4
(C) 2 and 7
(D) 3 and 4
(E) 3 and 10

Let’s isolate x in each inequality.

x + 5 > 2

x > -3

Next we simplify x – 3 < 7.

x – 3 < 7

x < 10

We know that x is greater than -3 and less than 10.

x+5 > 2
taking 5 on other side, we get: x > 2-5; x > -3

x - 3 < 7

taking -3 on other side, we get: x > 3+7; x > 10

x lies between -3 and 10
