Re: If x = -5/8 and y = -1/2, what is the value of the expression -2x – y^ [#permalink]
x = -5/8 and y = -1/2

==> -2(-5/8) - (1/2)^2 = 5/4 - 1/4 = 1

A) -3/2
B) -1
C) 1
D) 3/2
E) 7/4

Replacing x with \(x=-\cfrac { 5 }{ 8 }\) and y with\(y=-\cfrac { 1 }{ 2 }\) in the expression given:

\(-2x-{ y }^{ 2 }=\\ -2\left( -\cfrac { 5 }{ 8 } \right) -{ \left( -\cfrac { 1 }{ 2 } \right) }^{ 2 }=\\ \cfrac { 5 }{ 4 } -\cfrac { 1 }{ 4 } =\\ \cfrac { 4 }{ 4 } =\\ 1\)

A. \(-\frac{3}{2}\)

B. ‒1

C. 1

D. \(\frac{3}{2}\)

E. \(\frac{7}{4}\)

Substituting the given values into the expression, we have:

-2(-5/8) - (-1/2)^2

10/8 - 1/4 = 5/4 - 1/4 = 4/4 = 1

\(-2(\frac{-5}{8})-(\frac{-1}{2})^2\)
\(\frac{10}{8}-\frac{1}{4}\)
\(\frac{8}{8}\)
\(1\)
